ADULT EDUCATION SPECIALIST

REPORTS TO: Education Manager

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time, Non-Exempt

PAY RATE:  $16/hr; mileage reimbursement ($0.58 or current CA reimbursement rate)

The Adult Education Specialist shall be responsible for supporting ILACSD’s Education Department to implement its adult education programs, contracts, grants, and events. This staff member will run the organization’s community workshop program, including creating and developing additional content, conducting outreach to recruit participation including new audiences, facilitating workshops, and leading support staff.  Duties will also include marketing and scheduling adult presentations and community outreach booths. The staff member will present to companies and community organizations, as well as attend events throughout San Diego County.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Coordinate and implement contract and grant programs within ILACSD’s Education department
  • Develop, research, schedule, and market approximately 20 community workshops annually focused on waste reduction and sustainability
  • Prepare materials for upcoming workshops
  • Lead workshop content development under direction of the Education Manager
  • Lead a team of educators in executing day-of workshop details, including event setup, education stations, activities, and wrap-up
  • Market, schedule, and deliver both free and fee for service educational presentations to adult audiences, including companies, community groups, and more
  • Research and schedule over 200 ILACSD outreach booths annually at corporate and community events, fairs, and festivals
  • Track and report delivered and scheduled programs toward achievement of goals and objectives
  • Manage the maintenance and care of department supplies, inventory, purchasing, and proper and timely storage
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, including community groups/organizations, civic organizations, clubs, corporations, and governmental agencies
  • Assist with the Education Department events (Kids’ Ocean Day and others as needed)
  • Attendance at various community events

 

OTHER

  • Attend community meetings when appropriate to further expand organization’s presence in the community
  • Additional organizational and community support as necessary
  • Other duties to support the ILACSD team

 

Position Requirements

  • College degree; environmental and/or education background/experience
  • In depth knowledge of leading edge practices in waste reduction and innovative solutions to empower individuals to reduce waste
  • Knowledge of stormwater pollution prevention, waste diversion, and zero waste lifestyles
  • Proven experience inspiring behavior change among diverse community members
  • Event planning experience
  • Ability to educate, inspire, and empower groups of all sizes, ages, and demographics
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences, including strong writing skills and public speaking skills
  • Commitment to working in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot event challenges efficiently and confidently
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to live a zero waste lifestyle
  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel
  • Ability to work weekends and/or evenings
  • Microsoft Office proficiency (especially PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
