Collective Leadership: What is It, Why is It Important, and How Can You Build Capacity for It?

Collective Leadership – a group of people working towards shared goals while sharing decision making and working collaboratively. This is critical to both Collective Impact Initiatives and other group efforts including high functioning teams and Boards. The basic elements of Collective Leadership will be covered as well as basic practices, information about core capacities and tools that you can use for self assessment.

  • Understand the Fundamentals of Collective Leadership and the 6 Elements of Collective Leadership
  • Be familiar with the differences between Individual and Collective Leadership
  • Learn about resources for self-assessment and capacity building of Collective Leadership

Cassandra O'Neill
CEO - Wholonomy Consulting

Cassandra O’Neill has over 25 years of experience building leadership capacity in the social sector. She has worked with leaders in over 200 organizations including schools, government agencies, foundations, and a variety of nonprofit organizations. She applies strength based approaches to facilitation, strategic planning, coaching, research, and evaluation.

Prior to becoming a consultant in 2000, she worked at Douglass College, state agencies in California and New Jersey, the Association for State and Territorial Health Officers, the National Governors’ Association (NGA), and a social service agency. She is passionate about building capacity for organizational effectiveness, system change, collaboration, collective impact, and collective leadership. She has written articles for two Charity Channel newsletters and contributed chapters to multiple books on governance and community engagement. She has also authored multiple publications related to building capacity and readiness for collective impact.
